Raiders Shred Cavaliers
Rolling into week two, the Raiders dominated the Cavaliers en route to a 48 to nothing win.
After going three and out with their first possession, the Raider offense got it going as Senior (SB) Jake Veale gouged the Cavalier defense with runs of 29 yards, 17 yards and finishing it off with a physical 5-yard Raider Touchdown that went through a Cavalier defender. Veale would finish the night with 18 carries for 144 yards and three TD’s. Senior K Tate Dziewiatkowski would kick the extra point to put the Raiders up 7-0 with 3:56 left in the 1st Quarter.
On the next Cavalier possession, the Raider defense would start imposing their will as they drove the Cavalier offense back 12 yards on this possession forcing a 4th and 22 punt. On 1st down, Senior SB Mitch Mallek flew through the line for a 35-yard touchdown. Senior K Tate Dziewiatkowski’s extra point attempt was good making it Raiders 14 Cavaliers 0. Again, the Raider defense would force the Cavaliers backwards 11 yards and having to punt on 4th and 21. The end of the 1st Quarter would end with the score Portland 14 Corunna 0.
The 2nd Quarter would begin with a Cavalier punt but the Raiders would lose the ball on the return. The Cavaliers would put together a short drive ended when Senior CB Mitch Mallek would pick off a 4th down pass at the Raider 17. Again, Veale would rip off some big plays by busting off a 14-yard run. Then Junior QB Owen Russell would connect with Veale for a 32-yard completion. Veale would finish the drive with a 12-yard run. Senior K Tate Dziewiatkowski would convert the extra point with 6:50 left in the half.
In the next possession Russell would find Senior SB Trevor Lattimer for a 66-yard Raider touchdown. The extra point attempt would fail making the score 27-0 with 3:45 left in the half. The half would end on a Raider turnover at the Cavalier 11-yard line. Half Time Portland 27 Corunna 0
To start the 3rd quarter, the Raiders would go on a 6:12 drive capped with Veale’s third touchdown of the game from 1-yard out. The extra point would fail making it 34-0. The Raiders would get the ball back after another Cavalier punt. Junior SB Gavin McGregor would race to a 21-yard touchdown with no time left on the clock. Senior K Tate Dziewiatkowski converted the extra point and the 3rd quarter ended with leading Portland 41 to zero.
In the 4th, the Raiders would find the end zone one more time when Junior SB Michael Gross punched it in from 2-yards out. Senior K Tate Dziewiatkowski would convert on the extra point.
The final score was Portland 48, Corunna 0.
After the game, Raider Coach John Novara said, "I was happy again with our defensive effort, Corunna has a lot of speed and we handled it well. Offensively we played better than last week, but still need to work on cutting down on our mistakes. We had a great effort from all and our second group did a great job of putting together a touchdown drive."
The defense and offense are putting some good things together with too many kids to point out, but consistency will be the key for this team. The next Portland Raider game will be September 7th at Home versus Sexton at 7:00 p.m.
