Portland Softball Wins District Title
Portland Softball team repeated as district champions on Monday by defeating Ionia 9 – 4 in the semifinal game and outscoring Belding 10-2 in the championship game. Portland had to rally back from a 2 run deficit in the bottom of the 6th inning and score 7 runs to defeat the Bulldogs. Top hitter in the game was Jada Walton who went 3 for 3. Emma Johnson went 2 for 3 with a home run and 4 RBI’s. Natalie Linebaugh, Brooke Seal and Ella Gardner also added two hits apiece. Adrianna Novara came up with a huge hit with two runners on in the sixth inning to ignite the Raider offense. Sophie Novara earned the win striking out 9 Bulldog batters and walking 1.
In the championship game the Raiders defeated Belding 10 – 2. Portland again relied on a big inning when they came up with 6 runs in the 7th inning to secure the win. Natalie Linebaugh led the offense going 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBI’s. Adrianna Novara again sparked the Raider offense in the 7th with a leadoff single to begin the Portland rally. Emma Johnson also added to the offense going 1 for 3 with a double. Sophie Novara again picked up the win allowing only two hits and striking out 4.
The Raiders are now 24 – 10 for the season and will take on Spring Lake on Saturday at Grand Rapids South Christian High School in a 12:00 matchup.
