PHS Tennis Over Chesaning 8-0

Portland won their first dual meet of the year in a pretty convincing fashion. We hosted Chesaning at the PHS tennis courts and ended up winning 8-0. Last year we beat this team 5-3. They lost 2 players and we lost 4 from the 2018 season. It's nice to see that we're still showing improvement over last season. There were a number of matches that required some grit to win though. Jack Roe was paired up with a player who had a style that has been Jack's nemesis throughout the season. Jack seems to prefer playing against players that provide some pace and hit clean shots. Today he played a tough opponent who just wanted to keep the ball in play and wait for Jack to make mistakes. Jack played some pretty good tennis, kept his emotions in check, and pulled out a tough one. Both 3 and 4 doubles struggled a little more than usual today. Chesaning's 3 doubles team just wanted to play at the net and in the center of the court. Cadin and Joe had a tough time finding shots that they could put past the net player. Eventually they put enough pressure on to win the match with great volleys themselves, but it wasn't easy. Both Kai and Casey are fairly new to tennis. 4 doubles has been a great spot for them but new players often have days that they just can't explain. Today was this day for them. The best thing about this team is their will to win though. Even though they made many unforced errors they never let it get to them. They played hard right to the last point and won in a match tie breaker. Portland next plays Williamston at Williamston High School on Tuesday, September 3rd.
