Obituary for Gerald Joseph Sonday


Gerald Joseph Sonday, age 83, of Portland, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2020 with his family at his side. He was born on March 24, 1937 in Portland, the son of Edward and Anna (Heyer) Sonday. Jerry was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired from General Motors after 30 years of service. After retirement, he painted for many people in the Portland area and worked for the Neller Funeral Home and later the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home in Portland. Jerry enjoyed camping with his family, fishing, coaching softball and baseball, watching softball games and an occasional trip to the casino. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Robert (Rita) Sonday, Rita (Tom) Mason, and Leon “Pete” (Alice) Sonday; sister-in-law, Mary (Joe) Pohl. Surviving are his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Gertrude; children, Kathy (Doug) Stedman, Dave (Lisa) Sonday, Dan (Donna) Sonday, Mike (Stacie) Sonday, and Kim (Nick) Weller; grandchildren, Kristin Stedman, Jessica (Shane) Johnson, Rachel (Brendan Cissel) Sonday, Kevin Sonday, and Olivia Sonday, Anna Sonday, Ben Sonday, Emma Weller and Hannah Weller; great-granddaughter, Kara Stedman; brother, Jim (Marsha) Sonday; and several nieces and nephews.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Mike Alber at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, July 13, 2020 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland.
