Drew Miller Named August Student-Athlete of the Month


Drew Miller, a senior on the Portland High School football team has been selected as the Portland Beacon and J-Dubb’s Signature Subs Student-Athlete of the month for August 2022.


In his nomination of Miller, Portland head coach John Novara told the Beacon, “Drew is a great student and is a two sport athlete. He is the captain of the football and wrestling teams and has an outstanding character. He currently leads our team in rushing with 34 carries for 277 yards and 3 TD's. He also has 6 catches for 90 yards and 3 TD's. He returns punts and kicks and has returned a kickoff for another TD along with 15 tackles on Defense.”


To be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must attend either Portland High School or St. Patrick School, and be a member of a varsity sports program or school-sponsored athletic club at his/her school. Nominations may be made by a member of their high school coaching staff, athletic director, principal, or a school recognized student government organization at his/her school. Nominations are also accepted from The Portland Beacon contributing writers.


The monthly winner is selected by a panel of Beacon contributors. The winner receives a free sub thanks to our sponsor, J-Dubb’s Signature Subs.


Monthly winners are entered into the student-athlete of the year contest. The winner for the year receives a party platter from J-Dubb’s Signature Subs.

Natalee Teachworth – SPS Volleyball

Coach Nicole Easlick said, “I am the coach for the Varsity Volleyball team at St. Patrick and I would like to nominate Natalee Teachworth for athlete of the month. She is a 3rd year varsity player, now in her senior year. She has been honorable mention all league, 2nd team all league and is in the running this year for 1st team all league. Last year she was also nominated LSJ division 4 all area team, and Ionia County all area team. She is the team captain this year and does a great job leading our team in tough games. She is a positive player and is always picking up her teammates. She leads our team in blocks and kills. Natalee always gives full effort and is a very hard worker.”


Ellayna Meredith – SPS Cross Country

Coach Dan Lawless said, “I would like to nominate Ellayna Meredith, Portland St. Patrick cross country for athlete of the month. So far this season she has earned medal at every meet. She has been the number 1 runner for our girls team at every meet. Here are her results.

Michigan Catholic XC Invitational (division 1-4) 13th place

Saranac Invitational 7th place

Bret Clements Bath Invitational 15th place

Eaton Rapids Class Invitational 2nd place

MSU Spartan Invitational divisions 3 & 4, 25th place.

In addition Laynie is a leader on the team, cheering everyone on to perform their best, leading warm up and cool down and having a positive attitude.”
