Former PHS Team Manager serving as manager for MSU Women’s Basketball

Tycen Frohriep, a 2022 graduate of Portland High School, served as the team manager for the Lady Raiders Basketball team for four years in high school.

As a freshman at Michigan State University this year, Frohriep secured a similar position with the Michigan State University women’s basketball program. He was one of 15 student managers for the Big Ten program.

When asked about his role with the PHS program, Frohriep said, “In those years I mostly kept time during practice and did some statistics. In my four years we were 78-14 overall (30-5 League) and 14-3 in the post season.”

As a manager for the Spartans, Frohriep said, “The majority of my duties included filling up water bottles, keeping score and time at practice, cleaning up the floor, and mopping the floor at home games.”

Frohriep told the Beacon, “I had to go through an extensive screening process. There were sixteen total people who applied for a spot and only four of us were selected. The first step was an information meeting, then there was an interview. After that it was a couple of weeks of hoping and praying.”

When asked what is coolest experience was in the position this year, he said, “I would think some of the coolest experiences would be getting to know most of the players and coaching staff. Although, I made the trip out to Minneapolis for the Big Ten Tournament even though I went as a spectator, not with the team.”

At MSU, Frohriep has a triple major in actuarial science, mathematics, and statistics.

He said, “My plans after graduation as of right now is to be an actuary, although if I am successful and retained as a manager for the next three years I would not mind becoming a graduate assistant somewhere.”
