FRY YOUR TURKEY, NOT YOUR HOME - Michigan in Top 5 states for cooking fire claims

With many families and friends making plans to come together to cook during the holidays, it is important to follow some basic safety tips to keep you, your family, and your home safe. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), more home cooking fires occur in the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day than any other day during the year.

State Farm, the country’s largest insurer, paid over $237.4M for 3,390 grease/cooking fire claims in 2023. To break down to the state level, State Farm paid over $11.3 Million on 165 claims in Michigan. Michigan ranked #5 in the top states for most cooking fire claims.

If you have a cooking fire, follow these tips:

  • Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Never throw water on the fire.

  • For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

  • When in doubt, get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. Call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number after you leave.
