Gunnar Williams gets 100th win, Pulling named Regional Coach of the year, and 8 boys/2 girls advance to Individual States
It was a huge week for the 15 individual Portland Raider Wrestlers, teams and coaches who advanced from individual districts last week to regionals this week. The Raiders excelled yet again, advancing ten wrestlers, breaking two school records, and earning an award!
On February 15, eight of the 11 Varsity Boys wrestlers placed at individual regionals in Whitehall qualifying them to compete at the MHSAA Wrestling State Finals at Ford Field on February 28 and March 1. This is a new school record! Champions in their weight classes were sophomore Branlun Simon (106), sophomore Landon Lanz (113), and junior Bradley Meyers (175). Also placing and advancing for the Raiders were sophomore Griffin Opperman (144, 3rd), senior Barrett Spitzley (215, 3rd), sophomore Landon Guilford (165, 2nd), senior Isaac Kramer (132, 4th), and junior Gunnar Williams (190, 3rd). Williams also won his 100th match. Congratulations on this significant accomplishment.
On February 16, four Varsity Girls Wrestlers competed in their regional tournament at Portage Northern where two qualified for state finals. Freshman Georgia Stahl (106) made history by becoming the first Portland female to win a regional championship. Junior Rylan Johns (235) placed 4th, becoming Portland’s first two-time girl state qualifier. Both girls will compete alongside the boys divisions at the MHSAA State Wrestling Finals at Ford Field on February 28 and March 1.
Portland Wrestling Head Coach Andy Pulling was also recognized as Regional Head Coach of the Year. What a week for the Raiders.
