Isaiah Pelc Named December Student-Athlete of the Month


Isaiah Pelc, a member of the Portland High School wrestling team, has been selected as the Portland Beacon and J-Dubb’s Signature Subs Student-Athlete of the month for December 2022.


In his nomination of Pelc, Portland head coach Andy Pulling said, “Isaiah currently is a senior team captain of the PHS Wrestling Team with a record of 16-1 on the season and 121-28 in his career imprinting his name in the prestigious "Century Club" in the Portland Wrestling Program. This season Isaiah has become both the Ionia County Champion and the Mike Adamson Invite Champion at 144 lbs while leading his team to a 10-2 record this season.”


Pulling added, “Beyond Wrestling Isaiah holds a 3.97 GPA and is in numerous school-sponsored clubs, such as Believe It Or Not I Care (BIONIC), Captain's Club, National Honor Society (NHS), Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and also is an Eagle Scout who continues to volunteer in our community and within his church.”


To be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must attend either Portland High School or St. Patrick School, and be a member of a varsity sports program or school-sponsored athletic club at his/her school. Nominations may be made by a member of their high school coaching staff, athletic director, principal, or a school recognized student government organization at his/her school. Nominations are also accepted from The Portland Beacon contributing writers.


The monthly winner is selected by a panel of Beacon contributors. The winner receives a free sub thanks to our sponsor, J-Dubb’s Signature Subs.


Monthly winners are entered into the student-athlete of the year contest. The winner for the year receives a party platter from J-Dubb’s Signature Subs.

Malia Thelen – PHS Basketball

Head coach Jason Haid said, “I would like to nominate Malia Thelen. The team is off to a 6-2 start and she is our team leader in Points (13.8), Assists (2.3), Steals (3.1).”


Brayden Simon – SPS Basketball

Coach Curtis Meyers said, “I would like to nominate Brayden Simon for the month of December. We had three games and Brayden averaged 14.33 Points 9.33 rebounds 1.67 assists and 1.33 steals in those games. He led the team both in scoring and in rebounding. Let me know if you need any other information from me.”
