Lady Raiders top Covenant Christian in Double Overtime

The Portland High School girls basketball team hosted the Chargers of Grand Rapids Covenant Christian on Tuesday night.

The Raiders would lead at the end of three quarters of play, but the Chargers were able to tie the score at the end of regulation. The two teams finished the first overtime tied as well, forcing the game into a second overtime period.

In that second overtime, the Raiders were able to outscore that Chargers and earn a 47-41 win.

Scoring summary by quarter:

1st – 2nd – 3rd – 4th/OT – Final

Portland 11 – 4 – 9 – 23 – 47

Covenant Christian 5 – 7 – 8 – 21 – 41

Covenant Christian was led offensively by junior guard Lindsay Minderhoud who scored 15 points.

The Portland offense was led by junior guard Malia Thelen with 16 points. Freshman guard Lilly Thelen had 10 points. Freshman guard Summer Stopcynski had nine points and junior forward Alexa Weber added six points.

With the win, the Raiders improve to 13-6 on the season. Their final week of the regular season will see some strong competition when they host Fowler (12-7 overall) on Tuesday night, and then travel to Lansing Catholic (14-5 overall, 6-0 in CAAC White) on Friday night. A Portland win on Friday night would mean Portland and Lansing Catholic share the league title, while a Lansing Catholic win would give the Cougars the outright league title.
