Local Youth Embarked on a Spectacular Movement Workshop: Partner Acrobatics Took Center Stage

In an exciting collaboration between the Portland High School Drama Club cast of The Little Mermaid and the Detroit Flyhouse Circus School, 25 talented students from the Portland Middle School and High School immersed themselves in a unique movement workshop, focusing on the captivating art of partner acrobatics.

The Portland High School Drama Club, currently in full swing with preparations for their upcoming production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, was excited to delve into a different aspect of performance through this movement workshop. The integration of partner acrobatics into their training will undoubtedly enhance their stage presence and physical coordination, offering a fresh perspective on the possibilities of expression within the dramatic arts. “As a program, we are really working on helping our young artists learn new ways to express themselves and their characters through physical storytelling. Circus arts is one of many artforms we hope to apply in our upcoming production”, says director Chandra Polasek.

Facilitating this extraordinary experience was Jason Cartwright, a seasoned professional from the Detroit Flyhouse Circus School, a renowned institution known for its excellence in circus arts training. The expert instructor guided the students through the fundamentals of partner acrobatics, focusing on trust, communication, and physical collaboration. Participants not only gained valuable skills in acrobatics but also cultivated a sense of teamwork and cooperation essential for both the stage and life beyond.

This movement workshop was not just about learning new physical techniques; it was an exploration of creativity, self-expression, and building connections within the program community. The event highlighted the importance of arts education in fostering well-rounded individuals and promoting a culture of collaboration and innovation.

Hosted at Portland High School on Friday, November 10th, this innovative workshop was made possible by community donations made to the PHS Drama Club through its recent fundraising drive.
