MHSAA 100th Anniversary is Friday, December 13th
The Michigan High School Athletic Association is in the midst of a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the creation of the MHSAA. This Friday, Dec. 13, is the day recognized officially as the anniversary of our first 100 years ago.
Perhaps the most noticeable part of the organization's celebration this school year has been the special 100-year patches worn by athletes during head-to-head Finals this fall and officials throughout the postseasons, and special 100-year medals awarded at all of our championship events.
Visitors to our website also hopefully have noticed special content we’ve published regularly since August. Every Tuesday we’ve provided something of an explanation or history lesson related to the MHSAA as part of our “Century of School Sports” series. On Fridays, we look back at some of the many notables who have been part of these 100 years with our “Flashback 100” series. Everything we’ve produced for both can be found on the #MHSAA100-tagged page at MHSAA.com.
The MHSAA is a private, not-for-profit corporation of voluntary membership by over 1,500 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition. No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools. Member schools that enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract approximately 1.6 million spectators each year.
