Portland’s Kayla Weller to Continue Tennis Career at Alma College
On Friday, Portland High School senior Kayla Weller confirmed her decision to continue her education and tennis career at Alma College.
Weller was a four-year member of the PHS varsity tennis team. She was also a member of the school’s volleyball team.
Portland tennis Head Coach Crystal Lowe told the Beacon, “I am very excited for Kayla to continue her tennis career, especially after losing out on a year of high school tennis last spring. This is a great opportunity for Kayla! I know she will be just as big of an asset for the Scots as she is for us.”
Weller’s honors and awards in her time playing tennis at PHS include:
2019 Team MVP
2019 Most Dedicated Player
2019 Regional Champion at 1 singles
2018 Team Rookie of the Year
2018 Regional Champion at 3 singles
2018 and 2019 All-League
2018 and 2019 All-Academic
Weller’s coach to be at Alma, Jared Guy, was also a tennis standout at PHS. Guy was named head coach of the Alma College men's and women's tennis teams in 2020. Guy was the Alma’s assistant coach for the two previous seasons. A 2016 Alma College graduate, Guy was an All-State tennis player for the Raiders.
According to the school’s website, Alma College, founded in 1886, is a four-year residential liberal arts college located in the heart of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. A deep regard for students as individuals is fundamental to an Alma education, with small classes and many opportunities for one-on-one collaboration with dedicated faculty.
The Alma athletic programs compete at the NCAA Division III level.
