Portland Softball splits with Ionia, takes Sports Carnival Championship
On Thursday, the Portland High School softball team hosted the Bulldogs of Iona for a pair of CAAC White contests.
Game 1: Portland 17, Ionia 10
The Raider bats were hot in the first game of the day, with Portland tallying 17 runs on 18 hits.
Freshman Lilly Thelen went three for four with a home run and a double. Sophomore Autumn Reffitt went three for four with a triple. Junior Jayden Townsend (triple), sophomore Bailee Fish, freshman Rylee Miller (double), sophomore Gillian Pung, and sophomore Chloey Page (double) each had two hits in the game.
Townsend got the win pitching the complete game and striking out five Bulldog batters.
Game 2: Ionia 5, Portland 4
Ionia rallied scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the win in the second game of the evening.
Freshman Bella Spitzley pitched the complete game, striking out five.
Townsend (triple), freshman Claire Lyon, Miller, Pung and Spitzley each had two hits for Portland.
On Saturday, Portland hosted Saranac and Fowlerville as part of Portland’s Spring Sports Carnival.
Game 1: Portland 5, Saranac 0
The Raiders jumped out to and early three run lead in the first, and cushioned their lead with singe runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Thelen (two doubles) and Fish (double) led Portland with two hits each.
Townsend struck out nine Saranac batters on her way to the complete game win.
Game 2: Portland 11, Fowlerville 5
Fowlerville defeated Saranac to set up a championship game with Portland in the third and final game of the tournament.
A nine run second inning put the Raiders in the lead for good in this one. Fish (double), Townsend (double), Miller, and sophomore Anastasia Seidelman (double) each had two hits in the game.
Spitzley got the win for Portland striking out five while pitching the complete game.
The Raiders will hit the road next week traveling to Eaton Rapids on Tuesday and Haslett on Thursday.
