Raider Football off to 2-0 start
The Portland High School football team’s 2023 season is off to a 2-0 start after convincing victories over Ovid-Elsie and Olivet.
The Raiders started the season off at Ovid-Elsie on Thursday, August 24th. In the first half of play the Raiders jumped out to a 33-6 lead, including defensive scores on a pick six and multiple safeties. As the teams headed to the locker room at halftime, severe weather rolled into the area and the remainder of the game was canceled. The Raiders would be declared winners and the final score was 33-6.
For the Raider faithful who traveled to Ovid-Elsie, many had quite a ride home dodging downed trees, strong winds, and one of the most impressive lightning shows I have ever seen. Many returned to homes without power, some for several days.
For week two, the Raiders traveled to new CAAC White member Olivet on Thursday, September 1st. The Raiders finished the first half of play leading 34-0, and would eventually secure a 44-7 victory.
Next week the Portland squad will have their first Friday night matchup of the season and their first home contest when they host Ionia on Friday, September 8th. The Bulldogs of Ionia are 1-1 after falling to Belding 22-11 in week one, and defeating Eaton Rapids 62-18 in week two.
