Shamrock Football continues to win
On Saturday, September 23rd the Portland St. Patrick Shamrocks hosted the Breckenridge Huskies. Despite being 0-4, the Huskies are a solid program and had played stiff competition, so the Shamrocks were geared for a battle. On this day, the Shamrocks were just too tough, and beat the Huskies handily, 58-35.
In the first quarter, the Shamrocks jumped out fast on a Brady Leonard 20 yard touchdown and Hudson King two point conversion. Brayden Simon capped another drive with a 6 yard touchdown rush, and Tyler Groothuis kick, making the score 15-0 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Breckenridge answered with a score, but the Shamrocks continued to move the ball at will, scoring on a 25 yard touchdown pass from Brady Leonard to Tyler Groothuis, and a 15 yard touchdown pass to Riley Mosser to make the score 29-6 going into the half.
After halftime, Breckenridge showed just how good they can be, scoring on the opening drive. Their hopes for a comeback were dashed on the following kickoff, as Devin Cook rumbled for a 60 yard kick off return. Hudson King then punched in another touchdown on an 8 yard rush, before Breckenridge answered to finish the quarter, leaving the score 44-20 after three quarters of play.
The final quarter was some more back and forth, with the teams trading off on scoring drives. The Shamrocks scored on a Brady Leonard breakaway for 72 yards, and a Brayden Simon 35 yard touchdown as well. This left the score 58-35 final.
Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Brady Leonard who went 3-3 on passing for 53 yards and 2 touchdowns, and carried the ball 15 times for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns. Brayden Simon had 11 carries for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns. Caleb Pline had 6 carries for 73 yards as well, and Hudson King had 9 carries for 58 yards and touchdown,. Tyler Groothuis, Riley Mosser and Brayden Simon all caught passes.
Defensive leaders were Tyler Groothuis with 9 tackles, Aiden Mosser had 8 tackles, and Brayden Simon, Devin Cook, and Riley Mosser all had 7 tackles. Caleb Pline and Augustus Teachworth both had 5 tackles as well.
The Shamrocks travel north next Friday to take on the 0-5 Vestaburg Wolverines.
