Shamrocks dominate Vestaburg
On Saturday, October 5th, the Portland St. Patrick Shamrocks hosted the Vestaburg Wolverines for a football contest. The Shamrocks were just too much for the Wolverines, and won the contest 69-30.
In the first quarter, the track meet began when Brayden Simon broke free on the first play from scrimmage, scampering 49 yards. Hudson King followed that up with a 13 yard rushing TD. Brady Leonard then broke loose for a 32 yard rushing touchdown. Brady Leonard hooked up with Brayden Simon on a 42 yard pass. The Wolverines got a seam and returned the final kick off for a touchdown. Brody Beckhold kicked 3-3 on extra points, and Augustus Teachworth caught a two point conversion, leaving the score 29-6 after the first.
In the second quarter, the Shamrocks extended their lead, starting out with a Charlie Thelen catch from Brady Leonard for a 47 yard touchdown. Vestaburg responded by getting lose for a touchdown, but the Shamrocks finished off the scoring on a pair of runs, a 1 yard plunge from Brady Leonard and a 6 yard scamper from Aiden Fandel. Brody Beckhold again went 3-3 from kicks to end the half with St. Patrick winning 50-14.
After the half, Hudson King opened up the scoring with a 21 yard rushing touchdown. The Wolverines responded with a long drive and score, and Brady Leonard finished the quarter with a 54 yard stinky leg to the outside to leave the score 62-22 after three quarters.
The Shamrocks allowed another score in the fourth, but responded to finish out when Brayden Simon would not be denied on a 49 yard rush. Brody Beckhold made the extra point to finish at 69-30.
Defensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Grant Pline with 14 tackles, Charlie Thelen with 10 tackles, and Gavin Groothuis, Brayden Simon and Ben White with 8 tackles.
Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Brady Leonard who went 4 for 5 for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns, and rushed 8 times for 111 yards and 3 touchdowns. Brayden Simon had 6 carries for 123 yards and 2 touchdowns and caught 1 pass for 42 yards and a touchdown.
The Shamrocks travel to Fulton for a huge grudge match against the 5-1 Pirates next Friday at 7 pm. The Shamrocks defeated Fulton twice last year, each time by 2 points.
