St. Patrick defeats Coleman

Portland St. Patrick visited Coleman for a football game on Thursday, September 1st for a first time game against the Comets. The Shamrocks were far too fast for the Comets and the game was never in question with St. Patrick winning 49-12.

In the first quarter, the Shamrocks got on the board early when Payton Russman broke loose for a 54 yard rushing touchdown. Tyler Groothuis followed it with a successful extra point. Riley Mosser next scored on a 60 yard touchdown reception from quarterback Brayden Simon, and again Tyler Groothuis made the extra point. A missed coverage allowed the comets to score on a 70 yard touchdown on the next series. The Shamrock offense was very effective though, and immediately scored on a Tyler Groothuis 54 yard pass from Brayden Simon. Landon Simpson picked off and returned the interception to make the score 28-6 after one quarter of play.

The second quarter featured another touchdown to Tyler Groothuis from Brayden Simon, this time from 15 yards out. The next series, freshmen Charlie Thelen caught the ball and scored a 7 yard touchdown, leaving the score 42-6 at halftime.

There was no scoring in the third quarter, as the 36 point advantage gave the Shamrocks a running clock, and they played conservative offensively and defensively.

The Shamrocks traded scores with the Comets in the fourth quarter, with Lucas Simon scoring on a 50 yard pass from Brayden Simon, and Tyler Groothuis going a perfect 7 for 7 for extra points.

Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Brayden Simon, who went 6 for 12 for 201 yards and 5 touchdowns. Payton Russman carried the ball 10 times for 146 yarda and 1 touchdown, and Tyler Groothuis had 3 receptions for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Defensive leaders for St. Patrick were Brayden Simon with 13 tackles, Payton Russman had 10 tackles 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss.

The Shamrocks play this Saturday at Webberville at 7:00 pm. The game was originally scheduled for Friday night but was rescheduled due to a shortage of officials.
