St. Patrick slams Webberville
On Saturday, September 7th, the Shamrocks from Portland hosted the Spartans from Webberville for a football game. Both teams were 1-0 to come in, but St. Patrick was far too strong, defeating Webberville 56-12.
In the first quarter, it was all green, with Brayden Simon starting off the scoring with a 6 yard run. Charlie Thelen had two great touchdown catches from Brady Leonard, one for 19 yards and the other for 20 yards. Brody Beckhold went 3-3 on extra points to leave the score 21-0 after the first.
In the second, the Shamrocks continued to rock and roll, with Hudson King breaking free for a 49 yard scamper. Brady Leonard also broke loose for a 26 yard touchdown, followed by a successful 2-point pass to Augustus Teachworth. Webberville answered with a score, then Brayden Simon then caught a 57 yard pass from Brady Leonard, and Jerryd Scheurer slipped free on a 19 yard rushing TD. Brody Beckhold made 2-3 extra points in the quarter. This left the score 49-6 going into the half.
The third quarter saw no scores as the Shamrocks slowed things down.
The fourth quarter saw Webberville march down for a score, but the Shamrocks answered immediately with a 69 yard touchdown return by Landon Simpson, followed by a good Brody Beckhold kick. The Shamrock underclassmen came onto the field, held the starting Webberville offense on first and goal, led by junior Gavin Groothuis who capped the goal-line stand with an interception on fourth down.
Offensive leaders for the Shamrocks were Brady Leonard who went 3 for 5 for 96 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushed 6 times for 106 yards and 1 touchdown. Hudson King had 8 carries for 64 yards and 1 touchdown. Brayden Simon had 7 carries for 61 yards and 1 touchdown and caught 1 pass for a 57 yard touchdown. Charlie Thelen had 2 receptions for 39 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jerryd Scheurer had 9 carries for 48 yards and 1 touchdown.
Defensive leaders for St. Patrick were Augustus Teachworth with 10 tackles 1 sack and one TFL (Tackle for loss), Charlie Thelen with 10 tackles 1 sack and 3 TFL, Aidan Mosser with 11 tackles, Brayden Simon with 7 tackles, and Mason Simon with 6 tackles.
The Shamrocks enter their most challenging time of the season, with a game at Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart (2-0) this Friday, September 13th at 7:00, followed by Morrice (2-0) on Saturday, September 21st at home at 7:00. Sacred Heart and Morrice are both highly rated teams in the state.
