Wezensky and Moore represent Portland in Cross Country State Finals
Avery Wezensky and Owen Moore made an unforgettable mark at the D2 State Finals on Saturday, with both athletes shining in a race that brought together around 260 competitors in each race. The support from coaches, teammates, family, and friends made the experience even more special.
Owen, a junior, finished with a solid time of 17:25, even if it wasn't his best. This season has been remarkable for him, marking the best times since 2011. His impressive improvement of over a minute from last year, along with wins at the PW Invitational and CAAC White #3 meet, sets a promising foundation for next year, especially with top runners returning, including junior Andrew Feldpausch and freshmen Liam DeWitt and Donnie Richmond.
On the other hand, senior Avery capped off her high school career with her second-best time, finishing in the top 100 with a time of 19:56. Her journey has been inspiring, especially after overcoming an injury that cut her junior year short. This season, she made history as the first runner from Portland to qualify for the D2 finals since 2010 when they were in D3. Her determination and hard work are a testament to her character, leaving a legacy for future athletes.
If you're interested in joining the team or want to start training this winter, please reach out to Coach Davids and Coach DeWitt. Both programs are on an upward trajectory, and now is a great time to get involved!
